Explaining 4G (The Future of Broadband Internet Technology)

Each day, it feels like more and more new technologies are becoming available, particularlywhen it comes to wireless network standards. Whether or not a person has heard of thesetechnologies doesn’t necessarily mean that they are familiar with the actual functioning andmeaning of the technology. When you are considering purchasing new devices, it is essentialthat you know exactly what you are purchasing and getting yourself into.

Although 4G is becoming increasingly popular, the majority of people are still utilizing 3Gtechnology. 3G refers to the third generation of standards established through the International Telecommunication Union. A technology is considered to be 3G if it permitsthe user to use both data and speech services at the same time while providing a minimumdata rate of 200 kbit/s. In addition to the increased data transfer rate, the 4G technology is100% IP based and will include heightened security measures to protect the user of thevarious 4G devices.

4G is the next generation of wireless technology and requires a download speed of no lessthan 100 Mbps and can reach the amazing speed of 1 Gbps. This will be achievable bothindoor as well as in outdoor situations and environments. Currently, the technologies that areoffered by wireless networks are not actually 4G although they do label and advertisethemselves as such. Instead, these technologies are the forerunners of the up and coming 4Gand, because of this, are able to advertise as being 4G mobile broadband.

People who are using these so-called 4G networks only have improvement to look forwardto. Download speeds will only go up from here and coverage will increase as well. One of theonly downsides to purchasing 4G devices currently is that they also come with 3Gtechnologies which are required when the 4G capabilities are not available for use. Becauseof this, the devices are usually somewhat larger than desirable and require extra power to function. Along with this comes shortened battery life.

Fortunately for those who have invested in 4G devices, the technology for this wirelessstandard is continuing to improve each day. The two networks that seem to be advancing atthe greatest speed are the LTE as well as the WiMAX networks. Despite this, this 4Gcoverage has still not reached the ability to match that of 3G networks. In fact, it is notexpected for this to occur until 2013. All major network carriers have either released orannounced the release of 4G phones that are able to be connected to either the 4G or the 3Gnetworks. Due to the fact that the majority of cell phone carriers come with a two yearcontract, a 4G device could be an excellent purchase considering that the technology onlycontinues to improve.

In short, when it comes to 4G broadband internet providers, the technology advancementswill include increased data transfer rates as well as increased coverage areas both of whichare advancements that were previously impossible with 3G devices.

Rising Cost of Groceries

It seems with each passing week, my grocery money buys us less and less. I mainly shop at Wal-Mart – we have a love/hate relationship. I love stopping one place and buying everything. I also hate the crowd, out-of-stock, rising prices, and more. Sometimes I do shop elsewhere but it is frustrating not knowing where everything is. I have started shopping at grocery stores when I need just a few items.

Yesterday I ran into a local grocery store and needed to buy something that I knew would be higher than at Wal-Mart. Beauty products are always more expensive at the grocery store. I was willing to pay though. Much to my surprise, the price was right on target with what Wal-Mart is now asking. They have been steadily increasing prices for months. Now there is little – if any – real price difference between them and grocery stores for some items.

Going to the grocery store takes at least an hour. I try to shop from a list but sometimes make substitutions if something else is on sale. That is challenging because it could change a whole planned meal. But it’s something that has to be done. Our grocery bill is tight especially with higher gas prices. There is just not a lot of extra money right now.

Hard Drive Recovery

Tuesdays are always my most productive day of the week. Too bad Tuesdays only roll around once a week. Not only did I tackle cleaning the much-neglected bathroom, I did some tinkering with our computer. Just a little background on our computer – we built it about five years ago, and we have been through about three hard drives. Our last hard drive we bought was a 500 gigabyte SATA drive. That hard drive crashed months ago and I could not get the computer to even recognize it anymore.

Recently we have been talking about building a new computer since we need Windows 7. I am finally reaching for one of my goals when I decided to stay at home with our daughter – to develop software. I’m really drawn to mobile development – more so for the Android but my husband is learning Windows 7 development. Since we are on a backup hard drive and 5-year-old technology, we want something faster with more storage. Our crashed hard drive was a Western Digital, so I decided to remove the drive to see if it happened to still be under warranty. Sadly it isn’t, so I went with plan B – try to get the computer to recognize the hard drive again. After some plugging, unplugging, cursing, and rebooting, the computer recognized the drive but still couldn’t read any data from it.

At least now I had a drive letter to work with. That is progress from last time. I ran check disk which took forever and didn’t help. So I added the command fix(chkdsk /f) to check disk – which again took forever but still couldn’t access the drive. I tried checkdisk with repair (chkdsk /r) that took the longest time but it also worked. For the moment anyway, I can access the hard drive. Now it is time to move all the files I want to keep to another storage option.

Our backup hard drive is a measly 80 gigs and is full. My portable hard drive is topped out at 60 gigs. That only leaves my husband’s portable drive and not sure how much space is left. So today I am working on deleting duplicate files and trying to make as much storage room as possible. I’m so glad I was able to fix the hard drive even if it doesn’t last. It’s such a relief to get some files especially pictures off the hard drive that I thought were lost forever. When something like this happens, it really shows how important it is to have a backup copy of your files.

Late Spring Cleaning

This week I have been tackling one task that I have been putting off. Today it is the bathroom. It has gotten way out of hand in there. As I’m cleaning, I think that some items would just better thrown out than cleaned. That’s how bad it is. Specifically I’m talking about the toothbrush holder.

Our toothbrush holder sits on the counter, so all kinds of nasty, gross grim winds up inside it. I did clean it and was trying to think of a way to keep it cleaner when I remember a trick my mom used to do when we were growing up. She would line the soap dish and the toothbrush holder with aluminum foil. When I was a kid, I couldn’t fathom why she did that until I started cleaning the bathroom. It is so much easier to remove tin foil than to deep clean these small crevices. Much like we use tin foil in the oven to make clean up easier, my mom uses it in the bathroom to make cleaning a breeze.

From now on I will definitely use aluminum foil on the toothbrush holder as I never want to have to clean such a mess again.
