How often do you change your kitchen sponge? Recently I’ve started using sponges again. Before when I had used sponges, I would use them until they got completely disgusting and then would be so grossed out that I wouldn’t want to use sponges for a while. But I really think a kitchen sponge is very useful to do dishes and to clean up the kitchen.

I just tossed the old kitchen sponges today and replaced them with two more. The dishes just seem cleaner like how my husband swears we get better gas mileage right after an oil change. The old sponges were looking pretty bad and were beginning to smell - a sure sign that it was time to toss them or at least out of the kitchen.

Apparently that old kitchen sponge can still be useful for other household tasks like cleaning the bathroom. According to some(Internet at large), you can sanitize a sponge by soaking it in vinegar.

So for now it seems a kitchen sponge lasts about a month before it becomes completely disgusting. I will try to clean up my old kitchen sponges to use to clean around the house since they are still in good shape and it would be a shame just to toss them.

  1. Me too! I use sponges until it’s worn out. but lately i realized it should be changed often because it’s used to clean dishes and utensils that we use in eating.

    thanks!

  2. Oh ya !! I heard that you can microwave a kitchen sponge and eliminate all germs?

  3. I nuke my sponges when they start to stink, sometimes just after a few days. It’s mostly because someone didn’t wring it out properly. I try to change my sponge once every 2 weeks or so. Sometimes it’s sooner, sometimes later. It just depends on how the sponge seems and smells. I love my kitchen sponge. :)

  5. I spray them with anti-bacterial spray regularly and bleach my washing up utensils once a week. In some ways its a good thing to spread germs around a little, as it helps build up your immune system! But that doesn’t mean you should let your sponges get too disgusting!

  6. oh! I have been using the same sponge up to now, after reading this article I realized not to use a sponge for a longer period. Thanks for sharing valuable information.
