  1. We have checked all the windows and doors to ensure that they are properly sealed. Also we have insulted our pipes to make sure they will servive the winter. Also we plan to wear clothes in the home that are fitting for winter. This way we can keep the thermostat turned down alittle more.

  2. Keep heater off and use fireplace!!!

  3. Nice.. Turn down thermostat 2 degrees…

  4. We plan on lowering the heat a few degrees. We normally would have it at 77 but we will have it at 75 or so.

  5. Wow great post! I didn’t know that there is energy awareness month. Thanks for the useful information !

  6. We keep our furnace set at 53′ through the night and 56′ during the day because we live in a large 100 year old farmhouse. This summer we installed an electric water heater (1/2 price with the rebate from electric company) and sealed every nook and cranny we could find. We use oil rad heaters in bedrooms since we don’t have heat up there and we installed a woodburning stove on the main floor. During the winter I dry clothes on a rack next to it, keep a pot of water simmering, and almost always have a pot of soup on it as well. Oh, and I learned to wrap bricks in foil, heat them on the woodstove, then wrap in towels and tuck into bed with them. My husband made fun of me but in the morning my side of the bed was still toasty warm and he stopped laughing. :)

  7. The kits are fairly reasonable and do help to keep the house warmer in the winter.
