Aluminun Foil on Windows

Yesterday I told you that I covered two of my windows with aluminum foil in hopes of blocking the sun out and making it a little cooler indoors. Today would be the test to see if it actually does anything.

While the temperature was just a few tenths of a degree lower than yesterday, it is cooling off a lot faster with the air conditioner running. Right now it’s 3:30pm. Yesterday at this time the temperature inside was hovering around 89 degrees. Right now it’s 86 degrees. So it has been a great help because usually it doesn’t get this temperature until well after 5pm.

The aluminum foil was a great deal at 50 cents. It’s probably one of the cheapest ways to beat the heat!

You can buy residential window tint film at your local home depot or lowes.

Much, much better than aluminum foil.

It’s funny that I found this post about aluminum foil on the windows. Last night I watched a new show called “Swingtown”. It’s about wife swapping in the ’70s. One of the ‘neighbours’ was putting aluminum foil on her windows…for a completely different reason, wink, wink.

  4. Its really a great deal.I hope It’s one of the cheapest ways to beat the heat in cheap rate.

  5. [...] and find that the mini-blinds aren’t getting the job done? Well, I had posted about using aluminum foil on windows. While it works well, it’s not an option for some people because of where they live. We have [...]

  6. Good idea for blocking the sun rays for entering to your room… aluminum foil… I’m gonna use it then..

We had aluminum foil on our bedroom window and we had a visit from the Sheriff yesterday wanting to come in and look for marijuana plants as a “concerned” neighbor had called and reported that we were growing and selling marijuana. This really upset both of us. We are retired and my husband has been very ill for the last 5 or so years. We have never been in trouble with the law. We have always been law abiding and responsible citizens. It gets very hot here in the summer with many days over 100. I guess trying to be a little more comfortable and save a few pennies on the electric bill is causing one “concerned” neighbor to make false accusations about us. I don’t know what to do.

I made the mistake of putting the foil on the window with water, when I took it off it left marks all over the window, does anyone know how to get them off?

I have just had the same problem, if you use cerapol, or a ceramic cooktop cleaner on your windows with a soft damp cloth, and wipe off and clean with windex, the marks will come off quite easily.

    Good Luck

  10. Whenever I see someone with foil on their windows I always get suspicious, lol.

Nah, I understand the insulating values.

Never tried it myself, but it can get really hot here in Australia.. so it might be worth looking into.

    Cheers,

I want to put aluminum foil on my windows to make it darker in the bedroom, so I can sleep in the daytime. I just stated third shift at work, and its hard to sleep with it being light in the bedroom. What I need to know is, do I put the shinny side facing in or out. I think I should put the shinny side facing in but I’m not sure. If someone knows could let me know.

I think it’s already been mentioned but your local home depot sells a type of film that is a very light tint that goes over the windows to keep out heat from the sunlight and supposedly keeps heat in during the winter. I don’t have any experience with it so I’m not sure how effective it is for those who’d rather not put aluminum foil on their windows lol

  14. Did a drop in 3 degrees really make a difference??? What I can’t understand is should we cover each window in our homes to get the effect??? Because we live in a flat on the last floor and issue is that in winters its too cold and in summers its too hot… I really would like to try it out please do help me out here.. Thanks

  15. Great tip of an advice…. We surely try it out

I heard about window tinting and window film but honestly saying I ever never heard about Aluminun Foil on Windows before here really intersting one .

Just tell the Sheriff why you put up the foil and go on with your life. Some people love to make trouble. I can’t believe a law enforcement officer would actually fall for that. Sorry to hear you have some crack pot neighbors.

  18. Not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing, but what the heck, on the backside of the house that faces south like mine does, it may be worth it try.

It’s definitely cheap enough to give it a try and see what happens. Thanks for the tip!
