A co-worker is going to New York this week. He is using his vacation time but it’s sort of a working vacation. The company is playing for the airfare so he found some cheap flights but that is all they are paying for. Even though the trip was his idea, it just seems wrong the company isn’t paying for more.
I remember having to travel for business to Washington, D.C. Not only was the trip a fun experience, but I learned a lot about traveling on the company dime. First and foremost is to book your own travel and accommodations. I flew into an airport 30 minutes away and stayed in a hotel undergoing renovations. Nothing like the sound of a jackhammer at 7am. I learned a valuable lesson: no one cares more about your comfort than you do. Traveling when the company is paying for it might mean you have a strict budget but shouldn’t mean that you have to sacrifice too much like a decent night’s sleep.
