One things I miss about not working in computer networking is keeping track of the latest computer products. It was always fun to research products or to find a product to meet a certain need. From buying used cisco products to finding an adequate photo software, no matter what the challenge, it was fun to do some online browsing.

Our computer network at home consists of a router. It doesn’t need much attention, so there isn’t a lot of tweaking or tinkering I get to do these days. Since I do plan to go back to the networking field once Rae is in school, I need to stay current on trends and products. It is just not as challenging when I am doing it for fun and not for a project. Still I will just have to find a way to make it enjoyable so I can keep up with the computing world.

  1. As life gets busier for computer consultants, it often becomes really difficult to keep up with all the current trends in technology (and is, especially for small business computer consultants not so necessary since most clients will be a bit behind the curve). It seems that, particularly since you intend to get back into the computer business someday, now is a great time to do a bit of research … it’s possible you won’t have as much time for research once you get back into working in technology full time.

  2. You could always cruise product feeds and blogs?

If you like browsing used Cisco stuff (etc.) check out http://www.networkbrokers.com.au - there’s pretty much anything you’d want.

Do you read Techdirt, Technorati, Google Technology feeds? I subscribe to a bunch of RSS feeds through filtering services and then have them mailed to my inbox. That way I always know what’s going on in the tech world :)
